History

Intent

At APSoL, our intention is to develop pupils to have a broad and deep understanding of history, grasping not only the substantive understanding of what happened in the past but also understanding the discipline of history and how we are able to draw conclusions about the past.

Implementation

History is taught every week. Our lessons seek to consistently deepen children's knowledge of key events. We revisit previously learned topics to build strong recall of key historical facts. As with all our subjects, the understanding of specific vocabulary is crucial, so we ensure it is explicitly taught and revised.

Lessons center around an enquiry question, which pupils explore through a range of primary and secondary sources, increasingly learning to interrogate them like historians. Our teachers model historical thinking and ensure that everyone participates. We embed debates, drama, balanced arguments, roleplay and music to bring the period to life for pupils.

Impact

When pupils leave our school, they will have met the objectives of the National Curriculum. They will have a strong chronological understanding of British history until 1066 as well as key civilisations, such as the Romans, Egyptians and Greeks, in addition to key periods such as the Victorian era and the Early Islamic Period. Pupils will have the disciplinary skills to consider a range of sources and draw their own conclusion about a period.
