PSHE/ RSE
Our intent is to equip every child with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to understand themselves, build positive relationships, make safe and responsible choices, and develop a strong sense of self-worth. Through engaging and carefully sequenced lessons, pupils are encouraged to explore their feelings, understand the importance of physical and mental wellbeing, celebrate diversity and develop respect for themselves and others.
Our PSHE and RSE curriculum enables children to:
- Understand themselves – developing self-awareness, resilience, confidence and emotional literacy.
- Build positive relationships – learning about friendship, respect, kindness, consent, boundaries and how to communicate effectively.
- Stay safe – developing the knowledge and skills to recognise risks, seek help and make safe choices, including online.
- Look after their wellbeing – understanding healthy lifestyles, mental health, physical health and the importance of making positive choices.
- Respect diversity – recognising and celebrating differences and understanding the value of inclusion, equality and respect.
- Prepare for life beyond primary school – developing independence, responsibility and the skills needed to thrive as they grow and experience change.
We recognise that children bring a wide range of experiences, backgrounds and individual needs to school. Our curriculum therefore creates a safe, supportive and respectful environment in which children can ask questions, share ideas and learn without judgement.
At APSOL we follow the Kapow Primary RSE & PSHE scheme covers the full breadth of learning pupils need to stay healthy, safe and prepared for life. This includes:
- Personal.
- Social.
- Health.
- Economic.
- Relationships.
- Citizenship.
At our school, Kapow Primary PSHE and RSE is taught through a carefully sequenced and progressive curriculum from Reception to Year 6. Lessons build on pupils’ prior knowledge and experiences, ensuring that learning is age-appropriate, meaningful and relevant to children’s lives.
The curriculum is organised into key areas of learning, including Family and Relationships, Health and Wellbeing, Safety and the Changing Body, Citizenship, Economic Wellbeing and Identity, alongside wider themes that support pupils’ personal development.
Our implementation ensures that:
- PSHE and RSE lessons are taught regularly and progressively, with key knowledge, vocabulary and skills revisited and developed over time.
- Lessons use age-appropriate discussion, scenarios, stories, activities and reflection to encourage pupils to think critically and apply their learning to real-life situations.
- RSE is taught sensitively and appropriately, enabling children to understand relationships, personal boundaries, consent, changes to their bodies and how to keep themselves safe.
- Pupils develop their emotional literacy and resilience, with opportunities to identify and express feelings, manage emotions and develop positive coping strategies.
- British Values, equality, diversity and inclusion are embedded throughout the curriculum, encouraging respect for different families, cultures, beliefs and individual identities.
- Online safety and safeguarding are addressed through relevant lessons, helping pupils recognise risks and understand where and how to seek help.
- Teachers create a safe and inclusive learning environment, establishing clear ground rules that enable pupils to participate in discussions respectfully and confidently.
- Learning is reinforced through assemblies, school-wide initiatives, pastoral support and everyday school life, ensuring that PSHE is not viewed as a standalone subject.
- Teachers assess pupils’ understanding through discussion, questioning, reflection and lesson activities, using this to identify misconceptions and inform future teaching.
Impact
By the time our children leave APSOL, they will have met objectives set out within the Relationships and Health Education Statutory Guidance and will be able to draw upon and utilise their learning in their daily lives
